How to Safely Remove Gel Polish at Home Without Damaging Your Nails

Peeling off your gel polish is the number one cause of thin, weak nails. If you can't get to the studio, here's how to do a safe gel removal at home.

Quick answer: File off the shine, soak with acetone and foil for 10 to 15 minutes, then gently push the gel away. Never peel or pick it off.

What you'll need

  • Pure acetone

  • Cotton pads and tin foil

  • A nail file and buffer

  • An orange stick

  • Cuticle oil and hand cream

Step-by-step gel removal

  1. Break the seal: gently file the shiny top coat so the acetone can soak in.

  2. Protect your skin: apply cuticle oil around each nail.

  3. Soak and wrap: place an acetone-soaked cotton pad on each nail and wrap it in foil.

  4. Wait 10 to 15 minutes: be patient, as rushing leads to scraping.

  5. Gently push: ease off the softened gel with an orange stick. If it won't budge, re-wrap for 5 more minutes.

  6. Buff and hydrate: lightly smooth the nail, then apply cuticle oil and hand cream.

Mistakes to avoid

  • ❌ Peeling, picking or biting off gel, which rips away layers of your natural nail

  • ❌ Scraping hard with metal tools

  • ❌ Removing BIAB at home, since builder gel is thicker and needs professional filing
